Complete Guide to Measuring Your Dog for a Custom Harness

Getting the Perfect Fit for Your Dog's Custom Harness

At Little Bear K9, every harness is custom-built to your dog's exact measurements. Taking accurate measurements is crucial for ensuring your dog's comfort, safety, and freedom of movement. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the measurement process step-by-step.

What You'll Need

  • A soft, flexible measuring tape (fabric or vinyl - not a rigid metal tape)
  • A notepad and pen to record measurements
  • Treats to keep your dog calm and still
  • A helper (optional but recommended)

Important information, please ensure you read the below information.

We offer 5 types of harnesses, Explorer, Anti-Escape, Anti-Escape Padded, Explorer Waterproof and Anti-Escape Waterproof. Ensure you are taking the correct measurements for the harness you would like to order.

Specific Measurements for Each Harness Type

Explorer and Explorer Waterproof

Our explorer harness are our 'base' harnesses, these are suitable for the vast majority of dogs. They feature padding throughout, can be worn for long times and are crafted using strong materials.

Anti-Escape, Anti-Escape Padded and Anti-Escape Waterproof

The Anti-Escape Harness features an additional strap at the rear of the harness, this ensures your dog cannot 'reverse' or 'back out' of the harness. It's perfect for breeds with no recall, rescue and nervous dogs. Our Anti-Escape Harness provides extra safety and security, to keep your dog safe at all times.

Common Measuring Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring over thick clothing or coats: Always measure your dog's body directly, not over jumpers or coats
  • Tape too tight: The harness needs to fit comfortably with room for movement and breathing
  • Tape too loose: A loose harness can allow escape or cause chafing
  • Dog not standing naturally: Measurements taken while your dog is sitting, lying down, or stretching will be inaccurate
  • Measuring only once: Always measure at least twice to confirm accuracy
  • Forgetting to add ease: Remember to add 5-7cm to the chest girth for comfort

Tips for Accurate Measurements

  • Measure twice: Take each measurement at least two times to ensure accuracy
  • Keep your dog calm: Use treats and praise to keep your dog standing still and relaxed
  • Measure at the right time: Don't measure right after meals when your dog's stomach may be distended
  • Consider growth: For puppies still growing, you may want to add a bit extra or plan to order a new harness as they mature
  • Account for coat changes: If your dog's coat thickness varies seasonally, measure during the thickest coat period
  • Check your tape measure: Ensure your measuring tape hasn't stretched or become damaged

Special Considerations for Different Breeds

Barrel-Chested Breeds (Bulldogs, Pugs, Staffies)

These breeds often need extra room in the chest area. Pay special attention to the chest girth measurement and consider adding an extra 2-3cm for comfort.

Deep-Chested Breeds (Greyhounds, Whippets, Salukis)

Sighthounds have unique body shapes. The chest girth should be measured at the very deepest point, and you may need a longer body length measurement.

Long-Backed Breeds (Dachshunds, Corgis, Basset Hounds)

For these breeds, the body length measurement is particularly important. Ensure the harness won't be too short for their extended spine.

Fluffy Breeds (Pomeranians, Samoyeds, Chow Chows)

Compress the coat slightly when measuring to get an accurate body measurement, but don't compress it completely flat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my dog is between sizes?

Always size up if your dog's measurements fall between two sizes. A slightly larger harness can be adjusted, but one that's too small will be uncomfortable and potentially unsafe.

How often should I re-measure my dog?

Re-measure your dog every 6-12 months, or sooner if they've gained or lost weight, or if they're still growing. Puppies should be measured more frequently.

Can I use my dog's collar size to determine harness size?

No - collar sizes don't correlate directly to harness sizes. Always take fresh measurements specifically for the harness.

What if I make a mistake with measurements?

Contact us before placing your order if you're unsure about any measurements. We're happy to help! It's much easier to get it right the first time than to adjust later.

My dog won't stand still - any tips?

Try measuring during a calm time of day, use high-value treats, and take breaks if needed. Having a helper hold your dog's attention while you measure can make the process much easier.
